Sempervivum

Sempervivum is a genus of hardy, rosette-forming succulents native to the mountains of southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Each rosette multiplies by producing offsets on short stolons, quickly forming dense mats that tolerate cold, drought, and poor soil.

Fun facts

  • In parts of Europe it was traditionally planted on rooftops, believed to protect houses from lightning and fire.
  • Each rosette is monocarpic — it flowers once, then dies, leaving its offsets to carry on.
  • The "chicks" are baby rosettes produced on stolons around the mother "hen."

Common problems
